Social Studies Teaching Program
Social Studies Teaching Program is an undergraduate program within the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education of the Faculty of Education. The program includes compulsory, field knowledge, teaching profession knowledge, general culture and practical courses. In addition, the program also includes general culture, field education and professional knowledge elective courses. Courses are conducted theoretically and practically. Theoretical courses are given in technology-supported environments. Practical courses are carried out in two semesters under the supervision of the Practical Instructor and Practical Teacher in cooperation with the Faculty of Education, District National Education Directorate and Practical Schools. In the Social Studies Teaching Program, mainly History, Geography and Civics-based field courses and some Social Science courses are taught.
The Social Studies Teaching Program was established in the 1998 academic year to train social studies teachers who will serve in the second stage of primary education (5-8th grade, middle school). The Social Studies Teaching Program, which was initially affiliated with the Primary Education Department, was included in the Turkish and Social Sciences Education Department, which was established with the restructuring of the Education Faculties in 2016.
The program began accepting students starting from the 1998-1999 academic year. Although the student quota is determined each year, it is generally around 50 people. The Social Studies Teaching Program, located in the Nizip Faculty of Education building of Gaziantep University, serves with 1 Professor, 3 Assistant Professors, and 1 Research Assistant. Decisions regarding the program are made by the department board.
